Education That Expands the Way We See

For Dr. Nay, education has never been simply about what we teach—it is also about how we see, understand, and empower the people we teach.

​

Across 30 years as a college professor and scholar, Dr. Nay dedicated her career to preparing and inspiring educators while advancing conversations around literacy, culture, diversity, identity, and effective teaching. Her scholarship has included published educational journal articles and book chapters, peer-reviewed presentations at national and international conferences, proposal review, and service as a journal editor.

Central to her work has been the belief that effective education requires us to examine our own “ways of seeing.” For three decades, she taught a graduate Cultural Literacy course that challenged educators to explore how culture, values, experiences, and perspectives shape both teaching and learning. Her approach encouraged educators to look beyond curriculum—to understand the whole person entering the classroom.

That same philosophy extends to her work with young people. Through books such as Bro: Strive Toward Excellence and Dear Sistah Girl: Step Into Your Greatness, Dr. Nay combines motivational poetry, guided reflection, journaling, and culturally responsive themes to help young people explore identity, confidence, voice, community, and possibility.

Whether educating future teachers, contributing to scholarship, presenting to professional audiences, or writing directly for young people, Dr. Nay's purpose remains consistent: education should do more than inform minds—it should expand perspectives, strengthen voices, and empower people to recognize their capacity to create change.
